ABA therapy built for North Carolina families

We understand NC insurance and Medicaid

We're in-network with NC Medicaid Tailored Plans (Alliance, Trillium, Vaya, Partners, Sandhills), Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Tricare. We handle verification, authorization, and billing.

We coordinate with North Carolina schools

Your BCBA works with your child's teachers and IEP team—whether you're in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Wake County, or smaller rural districts.

We serve families statewide

Charlotte to the Triangle to the mountains—we bring therapy to you. In-home, or school-based support.

Hablamos español

Spanish-speaking BCBAs and RBTs available for culturally competent care.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the evidence-based treatment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ABA uses positive reinforcement and data-driven strategies to help children develop communication, social skills, and daily living abilities.

All therapy is supervised by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). We serve children ages 18 months through 18 years across North Carolina.

The goal? Independence. The day your child doesn't need us anymore.

Why families choose Achieve Behavioral in North Carolina

We plan for graduation from day one

Every treatment plan includes measurable goals and a roadmap to independence. We track progress toward skills your child needs to thrive without therapy—not just progress that keeps them enrolled.

No waitlist

Most families start within 2-4 weeks. Your child's progress can't wait six months.

BCBAs who actually supervise

Smaller caseloads mean personalized attention focused on your child's path to graduation, not cookie-cutter programs.

We handle insurance completely

Verification, authorization, appeals. You focus on your child's progress toward independence.

ABA therapy services in North Carolina

Therapy in your North Carolina home where your child learns skills they'll use every day—getting dressed, family meals, bedtime routines. Real-world skills that stick after therapy ends.

Telehealth ABA therapy

Live, BCBA-guided sessions delivered securely to your home, anywhere in North Carolina. A strong fit for parent coaching, caregiver-led strategies, and families in rural areas where in-person services are harder to reach. The same evidence-based approach and the same focus on independence, without the drive.

We partner with NC schools to help your child succeed in the classroom. Our BCBAs attend IEP meetings and fade support as your child gains independence.

You learn the same strategies our therapists use, so you can support your child's skills long after they graduate from ABA therapy.

Ages we serve in North Carolina

18 months - 5 years

Early intervention builds the foundation for independence. Communication, play skills, school readiness—skills that reduce the need for intensive therapy later.

5-12 years

Social skills, academic readiness, independence. We're preparing kids to navigate school and friendships without constant support.

13-18 years

Life skills, social connections, job readiness. Transition planning toward adult independence—the ultimate graduation.

There's no "too late." We start where your child is and build toward where they can go.

Most children receive 10-40 hours per week, depending on age and needs:

Ages 2-5: Typically 25-40 hours

School-age: Typically 10-25 hours

Teenagers: Typically 10-15 hours

But here's what matters more than hours: the plan to reduce them.

As your child masters skills, therapy hours decrease. That's progress. That's the path to graduation.

Your BCBA assesses your child, recommends hours, and adjusts as they gain independence.

North Carolina law requires insurance to cover ABA therapy. Senate Bill 676 (2015) mandates coverage for autism services.

Most families pay little to nothing out of pocket. We're in-network with:

NC Medicaid Tailored Plans (Alliance, Trillium, Vaya, Partners, Sandhills)

Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC

Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Tricare

Most major NC insurers

We verify your benefits upfront and explain exactly what you'll pay.

Liam was 4. He wasn't speaking. Transitions were hard. Mealtimes were battles.

His mom called us: "I just needed someone to tell me we'd be okay."

We told her something else: "We're going to work toward the day Liam doesn't need us anymore."

Month 1

Picture cards to request snacks. Fewer melthdowns.

Month 3

First words. "More." "Help."

Month 6

Started daycare with ABA support. Played with peers.

Month 12

Full sentences. Bedtime routine mastered. Making friends.

Month 18

Therapy hours reduced from 30 to 15 per week. Liam was gaining independence.

Month 24

Graduated from ABA therapy. Liam is 6 now. Reading, playing soccer, telling jokes. Thriving in kindergarten without ABA support.

Every child's graduation timeline looks different. This is Liam's story.

Communication

They ask for what they need instead of melting down. Skills that work at home, school, and everywhere else.

Social skills

Eye contact. Playing with siblings. Making friends. Real connections that last beyond therapy.

Independence

Getting dressed. Morning routines. Self-care skills they'll use for life.

Behavior management

Transitions without tears. Recovering when things don't go as planned. Skills that reduce the need for adult intervention.

School success

Raising their hand. Following routines. Completing assignments. Thriving in environments where we're not there to help.

That's the point. Skills that stick when we're gone.

What North Carolina families are saying

J

Jennifer M., Charlotte, NC

"They planned for the day we wouldn't need them"

Other providers talked about years of therapy. Achieve talked about graduation from day one. Our daughter graduated after 18 months.

M

Michael T., Raleigh, NC

"They reduced hours as skills improved"

Most providers want to keep you at maximum hours. Achieve reduced from 30 to 15 to 0 as our son gained independence.

S

Sarah L., Greensboro, NC

"He graduated and he's thriving"

Our son doesn't need ABA anymore. He's in mainstream kindergarten, making friends, succeeding. That was always the goal.

D

David K., Durham, NC

"They celebrated graduation, not retention"

When our daughter graduated, her BCBA cried happy tears. They genuinely wanted her to outgrow the need for therapy.

Frequently asked questions

about ABA therapy in North Carolina

  • Is ABA therapy covered by Medicaid in North Carolina?

Yes. NC Medicaid covers ABA therapy for children with autism. NC Medicaid Tailored Plans (Alliance Health, Trillium Health Resources, Vaya Health, Partners Health Management, Sandhills Center) all cover Applied Behavior Analysis when medically necessary. We're in-network and handle authorization.

  • Does NC require insurance to cover ABA therapy?

Yes. North Carolina Senate Bill 676 (2015) requires all fully insured health plans to cover ABA therapy for autism spectrum disorder.

  • What age can you start ABA therapy in North Carolina?

As early as 18 months. Earlier intervention often means faster progress toward graduation. We serve children through age 18.

  • How do I get an autism diagnosis in North Carolina?

Start with your child's pediatrician for a developmental screening. They'll refer you to specialists—developmental pediatricians, child psychologists, or child psychiatrists. UNC TEACCH Autism Program offers diagnostic clinics across the state. Autism Society of North Carolina can help you find providers.

  • How many hours of ABA therapy per week does my child need?

Most North Carolina children receive 10-40 hours per week initially, depending on age and needs. As your child masters skills, hours decrease. The goal is reducing therapy over time, not maintaining it indefinitely.

  • How much does ABA therapy cost in North Carolina?

Most families pay little to nothing out of pocket. North Carolina law requires insurance to cover ABA therapy, and we're in-network with NC Medicaid and most major insurers. We verify benefits upfront.

  • What does graduation from ABA therapy look like?

Graduation means your child has mastered the skills needed to succeed without ongoing ABA support. They're communicating effectively, managing behaviors, succeeding in school, and navigating daily life independently. Graduation timelines vary—some children graduate in 12-18 months, others need 2-4 years.

  • How long does a child need ABA therapy?

It varies. Some children make rapid progress and graduate in 1-2 years. Others need 3-5+ years. What matters is the plan to reduce therapy as your child gains independence, not keeping them enrolled indefinitely.

  • What qualifications do ABA therapists have in North Carolina?

All therapy is supervised by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) who hold master's or doctoral degrees and are certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Therapy is delivered by Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) who complete 40 hours of training and pass a competency exam.

Your child doesn't need to be in ABA therapy forever. They need skills that last after therapy ends.
