Can Level 1 Autism Live Alone?

November 21, 2025

Level 1 autism, often referred to as "high-functioning" autism, typically involves individuals who experience mild challenges in social communication and behavior. While each person is unique, many with Level 1 autism can live independently with the right support in place.

  • Independent Living Skills: Individuals with Level 1 autism may have the ability to manage day-to-day tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, and managing finances. However, they may need help with organization, time management, and navigating social situations.

  • Social and Emotional Support: Living alone may require additional social support. Some people with Level 1 autism may need help with maintaining friendships, handling emotional challenges, or managing sensory sensitivities.

  • Personalized Support: Many people with Level 1 autism benefit from skills training and therapy, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), to help develop independent living skills and cope with challenges they may face in daily life.

At Achieve Behavioral Therapy, we specialize in supporting individuals with Level 1 autism to develop the skills necessary for greater independence and improved quality of life through ABA therapy in New Jersey and North Carolina.
