Can You Self-Identify as Autistic?

September 9, 2025

Yes, you can self-identify as autistic, but it’s important to understand what that means. Many adults who recognize autistic traits in themselves choose to self-identify, especially if they relate to challenges with social interaction, sensory sensitivities, or communication differences. Self-identification can provide validation, community connection, and a better understanding of personal needs.

However, self-identification is not the same as a formal diagnosis. Only a qualified professional, such as a psychologist or neurologist, can provide a clinical autism diagnosis. A formal diagnosis may be necessary if you’re seeking accommodations at work, school, or access to certain support services.

That said, self-identifying can still be empowering. It allows individuals to embrace their experiences and seek out tools, strategies, and supportive communities without waiting for medical confirmation. Whether self-identified or formally diagnosed, the focus should always be on understanding yourself and accessing the resources you need to thrive.
